The answer depends on a few key factors like age, efficiency, and the cost of ongoing repairs. Here’s how to make the smartest decision for your home and budget.
1. Age of Your AC Unit
The average lifespan of an air conditioning unit is 10–15 years. If your system is within that range and you’re experiencing frequent issues, replacement might be more cost-effective in the long run.

Replace if: Your unit is 12+ years old and showing signs of wear.
2. Frequency & Cost of Repairs
Are you calling for service more than once a year? Are those repairs getting pricier? That’s a red flag.
Pro Tip: Use the $5,000 Rule. Multiply the cost of the repair by the age of the unit. If the total is over $5,000, replacement is usually the better option.
